00          Hello everybody. This is the Nashville daily podcast. I'm Stuart Deming and I'm Erin Pennington. Amazon is in the headlines. Again, what did they purchase this time and according to the FBI, these are the 10 most dangerous cities in Tennessee for 2020 plus. Did you know there's a place in Nashville that allows you to stream TV shows and movies for free and you could do all of this from the comfort of your own home. We'll tell you about all of this plus give you today's events on Nashville daily.

35          The traffic saga continues here in the city of Nashville. It's just terrible. So just avoid the roads and just stay home all week and work from home. I just can't wait until that's a possibility for everybody in the workforce in Nashville. Everybody will have VR headsets on. I would rather, you know what? I would go to the office if I had a VR headset. I would do that. I think that's reasonable. Does this VR headset include like mountains and like waterfalls, so you can just be like surrounded by that and like working on your laptops situation? No, no, no. This is the corporate world. You put on your VR headset and you're sitting in a cubicle and you're working in. If people want you to work, I'll slap a, I'll slap a dummy inside of the cubicle. And so, so there's a body can be present, but I'll put on my VR headset and go to another cubicle and work and sounds like black mirror.

28          That'll be the next episode of black mirror. We just want to say congratulations to the, to the Tennessee Titans for winning the game against Baltimore on Saturday. You guys are going to your first AFC championship. So congrats to that and we'll keep you guys updated about the progress of the Titans. Yeah. Looking forward to you know, it's kinda when something big like this happens, you know, I, I didn't come into Tennessee as a huge football fan, right. I'm from Kentucky. Basketball is our main thing that we'll, you know, we'll pretty much always talk about, there's not a professional team in Kentucky. So I came into Tennessee not really having a professional football team to really follow. So the Titans have kind of been that team. And you know, it's always moments like this where there's a lot on the line and a lot of people are talking about it, where you really get to learn more about a team than you have in the past a few years.

25          Yeah. When teams start to, when you actually start learning a lot about their history I especially remember the predators when they went to the Stanley cup and everyone came out of the woodwork to watch their games. So now everyone's coming out of the woodwork to watch the Tennessee Titans. Yeah, that's, that's definitely me. Probably some people would come out the woodworks for watching some of these shows. Bobby bones in the raging idiots million dollar show must, that sounds like a really expensive show that's happening at the Ryman at seven 30 tonight. So Ryman sticking to their usual seven 30 Nashville start time again, that's bones in the raging idiots million dollar show, robin.com/events for that. Oh, we've got a Celine Dion playing at Bridgestone tonight. Bobby bones may have some competition. This is starting at seven 30 at Bridgestone arena. And then we have whiskey jam just on the other side of the interstate in Midtown at winter's bar. And that is happening at 8:00 PM just a little bit after these other events.

26          And then some ongoing events. Yazoo lumination the Chinese festival of lights. This is happening until February 2nd. So guys, time is running out to experience this head to South Nashville to go see some amazing Chinese lights. And then happening back downtown. You have Hamilton. This is happening until the 19th. So this is the last week that Hamilton is in town. So make sure to enter the lottery, the see if you guys can win some tickets to see Hamilton at Tupac. I still have it.

56          One. I continue to enter the lottery via the Hamilton app every day. Still yet to win, but not losing hope that lives in hope.

06          That's really good. Some places that are losing hope. This came out from the FBI and this is the top 10 most dangerous cities in Tennessee for 2020. And starting off at number one, you have Memphis, Tennessee. This is data according from 2018 I don't think they have the 2019 data yet that's published. So that you could find this@onlyinyourstate.com or you can go to the FBI website to figure out what the most dangerous cities in Tennessee. But starting at number one, you have Memphis, Tennessee, and that is the number one most unsafe cities in Tennessee.

44          Right. And at the very top of this kind of their credentials for these top 10 cities it says it's, it's going by violent crimes. The stats that were released by the FBI, like Stuart said back in 2018. So it's kind of just a straight data pull from those stats. So like Stuart said, number one is Memphis. I don't think anybody's surprised by that. But number two, Nashville is actually number two on the list. But then again this is not like a per capita kind of deal. This is just straight number of violent crimes. So it doesn't matter how many violent crimes per person this is just in general. So again, Memphis number one, Nashville number two. So it seems like it's going to be going off population. So Chattanooga is number three.

46          And then number four on the list, you have Knoxville a number five. You have Clarksville number six, you have Jackson, Tennessee, which I was actually surprised by because Jackson is like a town between Nashville and Memphis. But I've heard that Jackson could be very dangerous at times.

03          All right. Number seven is a Murphysboro. If you're playing along home at home you can guess number eight, possibly it Cleveland, Tennessee. And then after that we have Kingsport. It's showing on this website a beautiful picture of Kingsport with a hot air balloon in the frame. And then number 10 is Johnson city. So if you're not in any of these cities right now, congratulations, you're probably pretty safe. Statistically. we'll see how 2019 went. And maybe that will be released next year. But yeah, this seems to be going based off of population. So, you know, it'd be interesting to see if there's one release that's kind of a burp per capita. I wish they would've done that. Just take a little, little bit of division, divide the number of crimes by the number of people to see if we can get a nice percentage per capita. But you know, sometimes you gotta just follow, follow where the numbers take ya.

01          Yeah, the, I believe that's on it. Yeah, that's on the FBI website. So like you can actually go to the FBI website that we have linked in the show notes and it shows you the estimated population with the amount of crimes that have happened over the 2018 years. So it's a, it's a hefty list of crimes that are committed. So that's on the FBI list in our show notes.

24          All right. So we had said that Amazon is in the headlines again. As promised we said that Amazon would be in the headlines fairly fairly regularly. But you know, this happened to be, you know, not because of something that's been ongoing with what they're doing. But this is again, something new, a, a, a new distribution hub. This is actually their 10th distribution deal in Nashville, which is just mindblowing. Because several years ago it seemed like there might've been just very, very, very few. But the ever-growing retail, this is coming from the national business journal. The ever-growing retailer is the intended user of a planned building at seven 10 Maya drive in Madison about a dozen miles North of downtown. This is near the river gate mall. So it's seeking to build a roughly 130,000 square foot facility on a 40 acre property, which is under contract to purpose to purchase, excuse me.

41          Amazon is really kinda referring this as its so-called last mile stretch of the delivery process. So maybe this is the last distribution center that's going to be bought in Nashville for quite some time. And maybe just kind of connects all the dots of rest of their distribution centers so that they can provide effective delivery to the Nashville area, especially for their prime customers, which I'm sure I'm, I'm wondering if this is the case. Pretty much everybody I believe know somebody who's a prime customer and can order order something prime if they really needed to. I'm, I'm willing to bet.

18          Oh yeah. I definitely bet that they're willing. They're able to do that as well.

22          All right. So we have done our due diligence, due diligence. We have done our homework and we have eaten somewhere locally here in the city of Nashville. We put on our hard hat and went straight to work. My choice was Cinco de Mayo. I actually went to the location of old Hickory Boulevard in Hermitage. And let me tell you, that was an amazing experience. I've been to Cinco de Mayo plenty of times than other locations. But it's been a long time since I've been to the Hermitage location. And let me tell you, the chips and salsa both came out. The chips came out warm and hot, which was amazing. The salsa had a nice kick to it and it was nice and cold, which was good. The food came out within, you know, probably five, six, seven minutes. It was just incredible. And our waiter was very attentive and didn't skip a beat, so had an incredible experience there. Stewart I see you have put your hard hat on and you went to work as well. Where did you eat locally? In this city?

30          Yeah. So I, on Saturday I tried going to the narrows, the Harpeth right in between like the big segments of storm and I hiked up to the narrows, the Harpeth and then all of a sudden there was a huge lightning strike and I'm like, Nope, Nope, Nope. Hiked back down. And as soon as I got to the car, the skies just opened up in lightening, strike that area like four times. So it was a really good decision for me to walk back down that Hill. But after the narrows a Harpeth, I drove over to Loveless cafe. That's always what I do. So I go there, it was a Harpeth. And then I have Loveless cafe. That's the only time I get Loveless cafe. And this time I was the first person inside of Loveless cafe. So me and my group were the first people that walk in.

14          They literally flip the to open sign when I walked into Loveless and I'm like, it has been a goal of mine for about four years to be the first person to sit down and have a Loveless biscuit. And it just happened this weekend. So I had the amazing Loveless biscuits. And then I also had a omelet that had pulled pork in it and a little barbecue sauce side of bacon. And then Amanda, she got some chocolate chip pancakes. And so I just ate some of her chocolate chip pancakes. And so I had all of that. I love this cafe that's found in West Nashville off of highway 100 absolutely incredible biscuits. And their jam is the best in the city of Nashville.

53          Did you notice

54          A difference for eating the first biscuit that Loveless had to offer? Yes, I don't think it like, it wasn't warm tea. Like they probably were sitting for like 10 minutes beforehand so it wasn't as warm if you came like at seven 30 in the morning.

12          Gotcha. Alright. So explores it Nashville tip of the day. This is going to coincide a lot with what we are talking about here in just a minute. But what we're going to, what we would like for you to do if you haven't done this already and we'll kind of give you a few reasons later on in the show, why it might be beneficial to do this. But if you have not actually gone to a local Nashville public library, there's, chances are there's one within a few minutes of where you live and, and received or, or, or requested a library card and it's absolutely free. Head down to your local public library or if you have the time head to the downtown public library. It is a sight to see their reading room is where movies should be made. Like that reading room is gorgeous. And and you know, we're going to talk about the public library here in a little bit, but if you haven't taken the time to go get a national public library card, there are a lot of benefits to do that and we'll talk about that later. But you know, take the time to do that and go eat somewhere local near the public library if you get the chance and tweet at us and, you know, tell us how your experience was. All right, so make sure you go get a public library card that is explores the Nashville tip of the day.

37          This episode of Nashville daily is brought to you by screen threads. Screen threads is a Nashville curated shop located in historic marathon village. Use code Nashville daily. Get 10% off your next online order. Their website is screened. The threads.com mentioned this ad and storing a 10% off as well. Guys, they have their brand new shirt designs out and completed. They're ready for you to buy, so you can get those as screened threads.com to see those new shirt designs.

04          All right. So there's a lot that can happen by having a library card, specifically one for the Nashville public library. So we're going to talk about all the benefits and everything you can do by having a national public library card in your possession. And it's, it's a lot. We went through this list and we went through their website and we were very, very impressed with everything that they have to offer. I do have a library card myself. So I've taken advantage of a few of these services, definitely not anything close to everything they have to offer. But I will try my darnedest to do, but right now we're going to let you of everything that they have going on, starting with the very basics and the very basics is the very basics of what a library was intended to do in the first place.

02          And it's have books for people to check out. And so the national public library has, you know, lots of books to check out. The good thing about their library system is that you can check on their website to actually see if certain books that you're looking for are available at the location that is closest to you. And guess what if it's not, but it's available at another national public library location, they will ship it to that other location for free and it gets even better if that book is not even available through the Nashville public library, but it's somewhere out there in some other library across the universe. Here in the United States there's something called the inter library loan. And so that interlibrary loan will allow the national public library to request them from other libraries and kind of let the national public library have that item for you to check out during the course of you checking out that book. We've got links to all of this stuff in the show notes so you can check out these links specifically. But it's really, if you're a book lover, there's really no limit to what you can't check out for free thanks to the library as well as the inter library loan, which is pretty cool.

25          Yeah. And another really cool thing is actually they have a digital membership too. So your library card includes a digital membership. So there's an app called Libby on your phone where you can get books for free from the national public library. And that's what Amanda and I do to read books is we have that membership. And so you sign that up with your library card number and then you can go download the Libby app. And then what's the cool thing is, is you can get books on hold and then you play on a waitlist. So you're next in line, didn't download when it's available. And they have audio books, regular books, magazines. And so that's all in your subscription or your free membership library card. And that's through the Libby app. I've read two books in the last probably three or four weeks through that app, which is amazing. And they, I think they have 250,000 digital books available in the Nashville public library system.

19          Yeah. And I can only imagine that that number is going to go up. You can also if you are there on site, you can actually a lot of locations have movies and television show seasons that you can rent and take home as far as you know, DVDs. They don't have VHS as guys and [inaudible] they have, you know, music albums and they have a lot of things on site for you to check out that aren't just books. As well. And you know, Stuart about a lot of audio books and regular books that you can download through that app. They also have a kind of a streaming database that they have where you can stream videos. I believe some movies but I think one of the, there's a funny one on here that's called tech boomers.

12          Learn how to use popular websites for free. So if you've, if you've been struggling to learn some of these social media sites, it looks like there's, looks like there's some, some help for you and don't worry, you're not going to get left in the dust. The national public library has you covered with that? Yeah. And then they all also offer free video music lessons. So I think there are already prerecorded music lessons. And that's pretty awesome. And then let's talk about their meeting spaces. A few of their branches, they have meeting spaces, especially the downtown location. So you can actually check out this link and you can rent out meeting spaces. And that also includes event rentals for other bigger meetings, weddings birthday parties. So you can write out a lot of space at the Nashville public library.

57          Yes. the only thing disclaimer, a lot of this, the, the meeting spaces especially the large ones are not free but they're, you know, at a, at an extremely reasonable price. But they, they do have conference rooms and, and writers' rooms and some other smaller rooms that are available to actually reserve online on the national public libraries website that you can, you can reserve for free. And each, each little, little library branch also has their own meeting spaces. So you can, you know, search that specifically based on the location that you want to be at and see what meeting spaces are available for you to rent. And some of it's something that's really cool that the national public library offers his classes. They have classes on wellness media arts, job assistance training, the list goes on.

55          And they also have a partnership of lydia.com which is a resource website for even more classes. So if you guys are looking to, to learn and to educate yourself on certain topics, they may have a class for you. Yes. That is actually lynda.com. Lynda.Com actually even also got bought out by LinkedIn. So it's kinda, I think it's now called LinkedIn learning. So it's probably the same educational resource is probably now labeled as LinkedIn learning. It's still says linda.com on the national public web or national public library website. I just wanted to highlight again, this artist work for libraries. It's really, really cool if you want to learn some music and have some music lessons. This is the quote from their website. It provides patrons with world class instruction through self paced videos, video lessons from Grammy award winning music and artistic professionals.

58          So it, it offers users everything they need for musical and artistic instruction from introduction to advanced performance, which is pretty cool. Students now have access to this kind of instruction regardless of reductions or eliminations of school music programs. And without the high cost of private instruction, that's it's crazy beginner to advance music instruction for the most popular string in band instruments. Professional musicians provide instruction, art and voice classes, also included, which is really cool. Video based with bookmarking features and on the go learning remote access 24, seven available. That's pretty cool. It seems a pretty fitting for Nashville. So if you've been learning too, if you've been wanting to learn a, a, a new skill, a new artistic skill or a new instrument, that guitar that's been sitting around forever in a, in your closet or you know, something you haven't picked up since band in middle school that you still have access to and you want to learn it again, you can do that to the national public library.

00          Speaking of artists, they actually have our exhibits and installations all throughout the library system. And if you just go to this link in the bio, it shows you all these super cool art pieces. The Sam walk-ins head, that's kind of unique. The Prince that's a very unique, it looks like an outfit that Prince may have worn. Nope, it's from a book, but you see all this super unique art all throughout the PI book library. And then they have a story of Nashville art piece, which looks to have like a Thomas Ryman on it with one of his steam boats. That's pretty cool.

36          Yeah, that is super cool. And if you go to the, most of these are at the downtown library location, but I know each branch has a little bit of their own story and a little bit of their own exhibits mixed within there. And you can find what exhibit is at what location on the national public library website. One of the things that is also really cool, they some of the locations host film screenings on a semi regular basis. They have an events calendar at the, on the national public library website. And some of the popular events that happen here you can imagine are probably some of the kids ones, right. Story time is probably their most most popular activity or puppet shows are actually pretty popular as well with the kids. Who does, maybe adults do they have something called be well at NPL. We'll talk about that here in a minute. And then they have some book clubs. I'm actually, you know what cert, I'm actually surprised that they don't have a singer songwriter series at the national public library.

43          Yeah, that would be incredible. Especially that middle like area where it's open outside having like a little popup concert series in the summertime. That's something we may have to propose to the national public library here soon.

55          Yeah, absolutely. There, it looks like there are two events happening this month. There's tech help in classes. If you want some tech help. I know. My, my grandmother, she's done some tech classes at her library back in Kentucky. She said the hardest part about learning a computer is moving the mouse. So you know, things that, you know, people who work with people who struggle with tech probably understand. And then there's also arts and crafts. We're grownups. So, you know, it's not just for kids anymore. We can go make arts and crafts. So there's just a lot happening events wise here at the library.

31          Yeah. And then Aaron mentioned the thing called [inaudible] and it's all about, it's all about your healthiness and it's about training people to be healthier with food, with working out. And they have some partnerships with some local gyms all at the different branches. So you could go to the be well portion on the website and will tell you about classes and how the eat healthier. And it's really about education and training that they offer at the Nashville public library.

00          I thought that this was cool. This is under the services tab. Inside of the library website they have services for immigrants and refugees. They have a few things that they offer under this category. One is pathway for new Americans. It's a partnership between us citizenship and immigration services. And it's a community wide approach to promoting citizens citizenship, education and awareness in Davidson County. Using the library basic instructions on how to use the library, including an a video series available in Spanish and Arabic adult literacy. It supports organization serving adult learners, offering information and access to education technologies and tools and professional development library schools and in school visits, library tours, excuse me, in school visits. So the main library in downtown offers guided tours, educational experiences and self guided tours as well. And then they have a jobs lab store if you want to talk about this which is kind of there, the use of computers for job search, need, et cetera.

00          Yeah. So jobs, labs is a really cool thing. So they offer hands on training on how to make a resume, how to how to practice interviewing, what to do when you get fired from your job. So they have unemployed training. So it offers the job lab offers a lot of resources for people to help get jobs and maintain their jobs. It's a really cool thing that the public lab,

25          Yes. The, if you are a teacher or an educator the national public library has have some services specifically listed for educators. And again, all the links for this are in our show notes, so you don't have to go scrolling around the the national public library website for this. Of course there's the interlibrary loan. So if you want a book for your classroom that the public library doesn't have, you can get it from basically any public library in the United States. And you can do all of that online. They do tours and school visits. Like I said earlier. They have bringing books to life is a preschool literacy initiative that emphasizes the importance of developing literacy literacy skills, but educating teachers, preschoolers and parents, they have curriculum kits actually for the classroom. Each kit contains up to 50 books, audio and video based on popular classroom study topics over 100 topics including you know, like your, your country's solar system composers, whether art history the kits are geared for either grades, kindergarten through second, third to fifth, sixth to eighth.

32          So it's got a lot of stuff. They have a classroom inside of their main campus in their civil rights room. You can bring your entire class there for an onsite lesson. And then they have puppet truck. The puppet truck works in conjunction with the libraries bringing books to life program to provide literacy outreach and educational programs to preschool and daycare centers. It, the puppet truck programs inspire a love of books doing engaging three-dimensional performances of classic children's literature. It's a 45 minute interactive presentation. Incorporating stories, song music and puppets from the libraries, extensive and growing collection. And then there's also a steward. I'll let you kind of dig into this topic a little bit. It's studio in P L which is really, really cool. It sounds like a really cool thing. Stuart, what is studio in P L?

26          So it's a training like workshop type thing. So basically right here on their website, studio national public library.org backslash studio P L and M, their quote right there is explore, create design, right? Tinker, invent, build, produce, think, develop, inspire, share B. And so it's a lot of educational resources all throughout, I think it's six different locations throughout Nashville where you could learn music and audio production. You could learn photography and design, film and media production, creative writing. And so they have workshops that they offer throughout every month in these different areas. So you can go learn how to use a DSLR camera or a mirrorless camera, how to do some audio work, how to write creatively if you're doing some script writing or if you're doing storyboarding. So they have these workshops and you can find all of those workshops on the studio P L and that is in the show notes under classes and education.

29          And, and one of the thing that I actually found pretty cool about their, their services that they have something called the Nashville after zone Alliance or nausea in a Z a, it's a of coordinated afterschool

42          Programming for Metro Nashville middle school students only. So it's only middle school students specific. But the Nashville after zone Alliance is a partnership among the national public library, you know, with along with Metro schools and serving, serving those, those middle school students. So I think that's actually pretty cool too, to see that partnership and kind of helping Metro schools alongside those afterschool programs. And then another really cool thing, guys, if you're wanting to visit the country music hall of fame, they actually have a partnership of the country music hall of fame if you're a Davidson County residents. So you actually probably have to show your ID driver's license or passport or your Tennessee ID to the library. So that they know that you are a Davidson County resident, but they have a partnership with the country music hall of fame. And basically if you're a Davidson County residents, you get free access into the country music hall of fame.

39          And so what you do is you go to a local branch and you pick up the country music hall of fame passports, and then you could actually go over to the country music hall of fame for free. So you can learn about all of their education. And if you have like a family membership for the library, you could actually use one of those country music hall of fame passports to bring your entire family to the country music hall of fame. So if you guys are wanting to learn the history of country music and see how they do the archiving process and just to learn about the amazing history of country music, the Nashville public library offers that for free for Davidson County residents. And I believe Stewart, you know, back me up if I'm wrong, but I, I believe the national public library also allows you some type of service to where you can renew your driver's license or sorry, not your driver's license, your driver's registration at their locations.

32          I'm not sure, we don't have a link for that yet, but I help that's a at all locations. No, it's not at all locations. It's at three different locations. But you could also, I think you could renew your driver's license as well. I know they have a driver's license kiosks, so you can renew. Let me check. This is on Nashville. Library.Org driver's license kiosk. So they only have two kiosks at Bellevue and then one up in Goodlettsville. So if you're looking to get your driver's license in Bellevue or Goodlettsville, you can and then they also have a registration renewal, K at kiosks. So if you're looking to avoid the incredible long rod lines at the DMV, make sure to head to the public library and wait in those lines. Cause they may be a little bit less than DMV lines. And the locations for those registration renewal kiosk is, is the main library downtown on church street, the Bellevue branch in the Southeast branch, which I'm not sure where the Southeast branch is. That's 50 to 60 Hickory hallow Parkway and Antioch. And also if you've already registered for your car and you just need a new registration every year, you can also do that online.

40          So don't wait, don't wait for the the lines just for your registration if you don't have to, if you have to, maybe the library is the best spot for that. You know, what you can't wait in line for is your real ID. The real ID is a federal law that is fully in place starting in October. And to get the real ID, you need to go to certain DMV branches throughout Tennessee. We've talked about this aggressively out, say on the podcast where the state of Tennessee is trying to hire more people to realize the amount of people coming in to get the real ID. But basically what the real ID is going to do is make sure that you can fly domestically without having a passport. So if you have not done that yet, now is your time before the October deadline because I guarantee you August and September, you may be waiting at the DMV for like nine hours to get the real ID.

It had so much more than I realized. So we hope you guys are able to take advantage of some of the stuff that's offered here in this, this wonderful city, in this wonderful public library system. And let us know what you think. Let us know what you have already used at the public library system, or if you plan on going to get your library card tomorrow or today or tomorrow. So hopefully you do. But tweet at us at X PLR, underscore Nash, if you already have your library card, let us know. We'll kind of take a poll and see who has their library card or who would never even think about getting one, or if you've never thought about getting one, but you're going to now to take advantage of some of these services. So let us know. Again, you can find us on YouTube and Instagram at X PLR dot. Nash. We hope you guys have a wonderful Monday. We'll see you tomorrow
