(00:00):

Hello everybody. This is the Nashville daily podcast. I'm Stuart Deming

(00:03):

And I'm Erin Pennington. Germantown's value continues to rise with a new announcements and Timothy Demam brain would be jealous. There is a new apartment complex that announced down by the river. Oh down by the [inaudible].

(00:16):

He got me there Aaron and we'll tell you about the only McDonald's that has a concert venue here in Nashville.

(00:21):

We'll bring you all of this plus today's events on Nashville day.

(00:36):

So yesterday was probably the worst traffic experience I had in a long time and for a consistent hour I literally heard fire sirens and police sirens cause there was that many car accidents last night.

(00:48):

I don't know when Nashville will learn to just take it down a notch in the rain. I don't, I don't know. You know, one of the, one of the things I saw yesterday was just one of the most surprising things I'd ever seen. It almost looked like this one. This one driver was trying to stay off of Galatin by driving through the parking lots and no joke, he was driving through the parking lots at 45 to 50 miles an hour. It blew my mind like one person not paying attention. They're dead in a heartbeat. Like, yeah. How about if that guy killed a pedestrian and like one of those parking lots? That's insane. Huh? That's crazy. That's natural traffic for you. Yeah,

(01:40):

It's really interesting. So send me some events happening here tonight. Grace pother at the Ryman 7:30 PM and then at Bridgestone arena you have the Lumineers

(01:50):

At 7:00 PM. So it's a busy night in downtown Nashville. It is and some more things that are happening at a, your normal 7:30 PM start time for Nashville, I believe their name is the chief Tanes and friends, at least that's, that's how it's written. The chief Tanes and friends are going to be at T pack. They're going to be playing some Irish music. So if you're a fan of the Celtic and the Irish music, you can head over to T pack at 7:30 PM for the chief Tanes and friends and then at the Nashville symphony center at 6:00 PM a little bit of an early start time so you can catch a show before you head out of downtown is the national symphony crescendo club and city winery present wine and woodwinds. This is again at the symphony center at 6:00 PM the crescendo club I heard is really, really growing. If you're a musician you will get that.

(02:42):

Yeah, that's pretty funny. And then happening in East Nashville, you have East Nashville restaurant week. Make sure to listen later to the episode because we're, our tip of the day is all about butcher and bee and we're going to talk about butcher and B for our tip of the day. And then happening at T pack you have a streetcar named desire and that's happening February 23rd so this is the last week to see a streetcar, streetcar named desire.

(03:05):

So guys, I, I purposefully left out part of our show open that we usually write out completely to catch Stewart off guard with the Timothy [inaudible] and joke Stuart for, for those who may have felt a little bit left out of that. What's the history behind Timothy [inaudible]?

(03:23):

Yeah, so Timothy [inaudible] was a French fur trader from Quebec and he actually traveled down here to the middle Tennessee area. And the, it was not middle Tennessee at the time, but he came down here and he was a French fur trader that traded with the native Americans that lived in this area. And it's a really funny joke, Aaron and I have been saying this for I think two years now, almost going on the possibly three years soon in a cave down by the river. And the reason we say that is cause Timothy [inaudible] and actually lived in a cave down by the river and where this apartment complex is going, it's almost exactly where that cave down by the river is. So it's pretty crazy. So what's happening, this is in Metro center. So Metro center is North of Germantown, North of a solemn town. And then it's on the other side of that interesting 40, 65 type split. There's a new Chick-fil-A over there which is fantastic. And they're, they're planning on building an apartment complex with 300 apartments at 200 Cumberland bend in Metro center on March 5th met your on March 5th Metro council will hold a public hearing that will change the zoning on the 7.1 acre site. Switching from industrial to zoning to development zoning at Metro center. That's crazy.

(04:50):

Stuart, I don't know if you remember this, but in some of our early, early days with explore, you and I actually took scooters and the first time that scooters came in around Nashville, we took the German town that Greenway from German town and almost went all the way through Metro center. And I think we actually got close to this area because it follows along the river path. So we got pretty close. I don't know if we got exactly to the interstate or not, but we got pretty dang close. But, but yeah, this, this apartment side is going to be really cool. I'm excited about anything that's going to be close to the river. I think living by water and everything is, is great and I think as much as you can build along the banks of a river and take advantage of that real estate, the better to have 300 units in this I think is so cool. Metro centers growing like crazy, that area just North of downtown the, you know, 10 years down the road, there's not going to be a distinction between downtown and Germantown and Metro center in anything. It's all going to look like a giant downtown. So cool to see that there are that are still kind of bridging this, this gap from downtown to the

(06:03):

Cumberland river. I do remember that time that we took the scooters to Metro center. I think I ran over a snake. I'm pretty sure that was the time I ran over a snake. Yeah, yeah. You remember? Yeah. Yeah. I did run over a snake that happens to me all the time. I run out or step on a steak and a then there's a really big corner of that that's going downhill towards Metro center on that Greenway. And I almost wiped out pretty hard on that scooter. So I do remember that time pretty vividly. Hey, guess what, what helps, what we're talking about 300 more apartments are even going to be even more announced in German town. So you have 300 being built in Metro center and then you have another 300 being built in German town. So altogether we're talking about 600 apartments coming within the next two years to North Nashville.

(06:50):

Yeah. So there are this, this announcement, this is a Nashville business journal. This link is in our show notes. You can go learn more details about what's happening in, in Germantown. But there's a $144 million mixed use development that's, that's going on in Germantown. Kind of right close to Rosa parks Boulevard, right. Kind of close to the Kroger by Roffman daughters. And there are 300 apartments that are now being announced for this site to an Atlanta base property management area. And I think they're going to finance close to 330 apartments is what it's saying. This area is going to have 83,000 square feet of office space and a retail building for a cafe, which that cafe is going to have some competition because barista parlor is just around the corner and then a, what's the name of that coffee shop that's pretty close to there?

(07:56):

It's, I, I clearly just escaped my mind. I know I'm going to, I'm going to figure it out. Steadfast coffee, but steadfast coffee is incredible. I think it's actually won some awards for what they have done. But this development's called Taylor place. It's one of the several places that are actually shaping dirt German town into an entirely new area, almost. I German town used to be a place according to people who have been here longer than we have. A has been a place where a was huge in the the, the German immigrant, you know industry back in the 18 hundreds you know, back early in the late 19 hundreds, it was a place that nobody went to because it was so run down and now it's turned into a thriving neighborhood area. And 10 years is going to be a thriving mixed use office space development area. So it's interesting to see how Germantown is, is shaping out from from just a few years ago into, into today.

(08:55):

Oh, it's absolutely insane. That, that's happening in Germantown. And earlier before the podcast, you thought it was the, the butcher house or the slaughter house that was being redeveloped and you're like, well, did we talk about this like two weeks ago? And I was like, no, this is a whole different warehouse in German town that's being redeveloped. So the other night I had a food tour in downtown Nashville and I went to a few local restaurants, but I'm only going to highlight one. And that's rice. And I had the chicken biscuit with the American cheese. And pickles, the exact recommendation that Spencer, the owner of rise gave us on the podcast a couple of weeks ago. It was really, really, really, really good. Have you had the American cheese with the regular chicken biscuit and pickles? Yeah, Aaron.

(09:41):

No I haven't. And there's, there's only one reason for that and it's my stubbornness for really loving breakfast food and I don't think a chicken biscuit for breakfast should have cheese on it. And so therefore I don't get it. If I was really feeling some lunch or something like that, sure cheese will go on there. But because of my stubbornness of anywhere I go that serves breakfast all day, you won't find me getting anything else than breakfast food. So I have not tried the cheese on the chicken sandwiches yet.

(10:13):

I, I thought you were going to say the pickles cause like I put cheese on all of my breakfast type foods. This last week I've been making these killer breakfast sandwiches with sausage and everything. Bagels and it's covered in cheese. And so like I thought you going to say I can't eat it because it has pickles on it in the morning. And I was like, okay, that's understandable. But I'm really confused about not having cheese on the chicken biscuit.

(10:34):

It's only the chicken biscuit though. Sausage, biscuit, egg, anything like that. 100% I'll put cheese on, but for some reason I don't want cheese on my chicken sandwich in the morning. I don't know. Yeah. Very interesting. So where have you eaten that recently, Erin? Well, so yesterday I had quite an adventure in downtown. Mayor Cooper had a listening session for his, his one of his transportation listening sessions in the downtown library. This was around lunchtime on a yesterday. So I went there and it was, it was a good session. You got to hear from Fay who is the new transportation chief. And really it was a listening session. It's more, there's kind of two parts to it. There's a part where you can talk with anybody there. There are council members there. I'm a Freddy O'Connell who's a over the 19th just district was there and spoke for a second.

(11:32):

Faye was there and she talked for a second. And even the regional transportation center for Tennessee was there to talk about how we're integrating plans from Metro into the regional transportation stuff. And so it was good because they really said, Hey, we're just going to introduce who we are and then we're going to listen. It wasn't like us just standing up and talking. The way that the meeting worked is they had several stations where you got to write down your opinions about certain things. One of the pieces of paper that you got to ride on was what would make you take, we go over your current transportation norms. And so you got to write down some of the reasons why you would use Wego or what would make you use. We go over the current situation. There was another piece of paper you could write down what would make transportation better for everybody.

(12:25):

Kind of a holistic point of view. You got to write down suggestions for several districts and specifics. Like you, you had a map of a specific district and you could take a posted note, write down what you thought should go in a specific spot for a district. And then they had this interesting thing where kind of like imagined old fashioned ballot boxes where you got to write on a piece of paper and put your ballot in a certain box. But instead of actually voting for a certain thing, what you pad was monopoly money kind of deal. It actually looked better than monopoly money, but you had this monopoly money of you could, you could use $20 in any way you wanted to, but divide these $20 into all of these categories. And so it was like Greenway sidewalks current renovations transportation was one of them.

(13:17):

And so how would you split up $20 to spend on these issues? And so you got to dump in, you know, however much of that, $20 into whatever boxes you wanted to. And so kind of to see where Nashville's financial incentives are for really each citizen. But the, the interesting thing is that it's good that they do this. But I think once all this is said and done, a lot of this stuff can also be done online, right? You can send an email out to somebody and ask all of these same questions. Now you might not get the same result as a listening session for people who are, you know, super concerned and want to show up to these. But you know, you could get similar results, especially for that how you would spend your $20 in the city kind of result with a survey.

(14:08):

So it'd be interesting to see what the results of that are. I put my email address in whenever I registered to attend, so hopefully there's going to be a followup email with some of the results that I, I believe we get. So it was a great, great kind of meeting and but all that to say afterwards I tried to go to several locations to eat in downtown Y I only had about 30 minutes. So I had to be smart about my decision. I tried to go to Oscar's first because it was right across from the library where the meeting was held. That line was completely full. I walked right out. And then I tried to go to Jimmy John's. I was like, Jimmy, John's is fast, right? Freaky fast is their slogan. Nope. About 30 people online for Jimmy John's. So I was like, okay, I'll walk in the arcade. Several good options. You've got Manny's red perch, you've got Maggie's ended up choosing Maggie's. It only took me about three minutes to pay and get my food at Maggie's. I had one of their Patty melts. It was incredible. Their fruit tea as always was just on point. I literally think I got two refills of their fruit tea and it was, it was a great experience. The arcade will never cease to amaze me on the good food that's in there.

(15:22):

And also the cost of the food inside the arcade. You can get four types of meals under a $10. It's incredible. So I would highly recommend checking out the arcade in downtown Nashville. But that is another tip of the day, our tip of the day because it is East Nashville restaurant week, head to butcher and B a, it's found, I believe it's still main street at this point. If not, it's Galatin. It's right in that area. They take where that name changes. But butcher and bee is an amazing restaurant that offers a great blend of middle Eastern and Southern cuisine. So it's like this middle Eastern and Southern fusion restaurants. My favorite thing, I have a few things that I really, really like from butcher and bee, but probably my favorites is the whip to feather. It's a, this, this fed a cheese, like that's whipped with honey, a fermented honey and black pepper.

(16:13):

Fantastic. They have these bacon wrap dates and so it's literally like a large Razan but it's a date and grabbed and bacon. You can't go wrong with that. And then they have bear Creek burger, so local beef and it's just a great burger. And then I just checked out their brunch menu and I think this is new for the season. But they have pumpkin spice French toast. And my inner white girl was literally screaming at myself like, Stuart, why haven't you and I experienced this French toast in your life? So it's a sweet potato, a French toast, toasted marshmallows and pecans. That sounds incredible. Aaron, I know you have not been a butcher and B yet. When should we go?

(16:55):

Sounds like pretty soon because that pumpkin spice, did you say pumpkin spice? French toast.

(17:03):

Pumpkin spice French toast. It's the first thing on there, like brunch menu.

(17:07):

That sounds absolutely incredible. Yeah. So I have not been to butcher and B, but that, that's what got me just there. Didn't know that until just now. So we'll, we'll definitely go have to try that. It is East Nashville restaurant week. I'm going support them. Great causes. Make sure to hit the link in our show notes is the all of the deals and how to participate and that is explorers Nashville tip of the day. Speaking of tips for Nashville, I know it's crazy to think about, but it's almost time for spring break and just when you think people are gonna leave here and go to the beach, we're all the people up from North coming down international because they think it's going to be this great warm Southern Haven. Well, they're going to be wrong. It's going to be raining, but you still, you still, if you have an Airbnb, if you have any guests coming into town, you still have to make sure that they felt welcome and what better way than a classic Nashville gift that you can find at screen threads.

And then yesterday we got, we gave you guys an overview of the history of the Opry land area.

(19:02):

So grand old Opry, the gay Lord and the old Opry land theme park that was there. But now we're going to talk about food near Opry land. And the first on our list, I'm probably going to butcher this name, Aaron, a Berean bear house. Beer house. Almost say German. How'd he say it? It's a Bavarian beer. Hos so beer, hops, beer house. Ah, yeah, it'd be your house. But this is a German style restaurant that's located at Opry mills mall and supposedly they have some of the best pretzels in Nashville. They have a great selection of Durban steins and Germans type beers and they have great, like a bra squirts and like sauerkraut. So it's a very like German style place. That's awesome. I haven't been there because I'm very biased when I go to a, that Opry area. One of the places that I am biased towards actually the next two places on our list, but one is mission BBQ.

(20:02):

We've talked about mission barbecue on our podcast plenty of times. It's one of those places that is really community driven, feels like a local place. Mission is a chain, but it feels like a very, very local place. But mission barbecue has, I think one of the favorite things on their menu is their sausage, their sausage, their smoked sausage is incredible. It's spicy and it's really good, especially mixed with their Mac and cheese. Put on a slider with some Mac and cheese. You can just like, I just love and making my kind of own little creations at mission barbecue. Of course their barbecue is good. Their Mac and cheese is incredible. Sir. What's one of your favorite foods at mission barbecue? The smoked Turkey sandwich, Mac and cheese. Their French fries or a baked potato with their white Alabama. Like course riders sauce.

(20:52):

That's my favorite thing. I mentioned barbecue. And then the next one, I think you talked about this last week and this is Chewie's. This is all part of Opry mills mall. And I know you like chewy. So Aaron, you talk about chewies I've had bad experiences at chewies but you take the you take the floor on this one. Oh, I love, love, love, love chewies and I found another reason to love chewies and one of the other reasons is they have a happy hour, literally almost every day. And it involves a free freakin nacho bar at chewies. Like everyday, at least the one in the mall, like this is full on nacho bar, like the like meat included in this nacho bar from like it's a, it's a long lasting happy are so I can't remember when it is. It's literally free. It's not like you have to buy a beer or anything to go do this.

(21:47):

It's a free nacho bar. And so you can go in there and fill up on nachos, have a drink or whatever you want to do. It's incredible, but I'm trying to find them looking at their menu. Now. I'm trying to actually find what I get almost every single time I go into a chewies and it has a funny name, which is why I can't believe I don't remember it. But Oh, here it is. It is the Chicka Chicka boom, boom. Believe Chicka Chicka boom, boom. Yeah, the chicken chicken boom, boom. They believe they have a half order for lunch or smaller order for a lunch menu. But the Chicka Chicka boom boom is incredible. It's roasted chicken and cheese with our fan favorite boom boom sauce. It's, it's kind of a green sauce, has a little bit of a spice served with rice and beans, but I'll get that every time.

(22:37):

I'm a sucker for habit. When I find something that I like, I just continue with it. But chooses is great. That's the Opry mills location. They obviously have a few more locations as well. I believe they have one in Murphysboro. They have one in the Midtown area as well. They probably have a few more, but those are the ones that, that I've been to another restaurant that's not attached to the Opry mills mall, but it's across the street from the Gaylord Opryland resort is the Opry backstage grill. That's part of the in Opry land. That's this small hotel. That's right there across the street from Cracker barrel, but they have great fried green tomatoes. They have an amazing pimento cheese selection. So definitely check them out. And then across the street from them, you have canny fork and I believe this place is the only place in Nashville you can choose your live catfish and get slaughtered that night.

(23:28):

Is that right Aaron? As far as I know, I think you're right. Caney fork is a place that you don't forget because there are animals galore, some live, some stuff. And it's a very interesting place. It's huge. That place is just huge. And that's what you get in this North Nashville area are a lot of large restaurants. You've got plenty of room inside of these restaurants. But yeah, Caney fork good food. But yeah, like Seward said, it's an interesting atmosphere in inside of there. And then you've got an original name, music city bar. Never heard anything. So original before music city bars, kind of back in the corner. When you take a ride I believe on McGavic as you enter in the, the Opry area. So music city bars back there scoreboard, Nashville. Stuart, you said this is probably one of the, the most recognized sports bars in Nashville. Yeah. So when that was

(24:22):

Living for Lyft and Uber, I would drop off as scoreboard all the time. And I mean like locals, I'll drop off the locals as scoreboard all the time. And I heard from at least a hundred people in Nashville saying that that was the best sports bar in Nashville. I'm not a big sports guy, so I couldn't tell you what's the best sports bar. The only one I really know of as in the Omni hotel, and I think that's I can't even remember the name of it. That's how often I watch sports.

(24:48):

Well, and then you, you've got your classic, you've got Cracker barrel, like, I mean, come on. You just can't get better than that. Sometimes Cracker barrels were where we usually end up. We've got this tradition already of going to South Cumberland state park and we'll come back and eat at a Cracker barrel. Not the one near Opry, but a Cracker barrel is just an incredible place. Everybody should have had a taste of Cracker row by now. If not, you've done yourself a disservice. Go to Cracker barrel and check it out. And then also we teased at the very beginning. Yes, there is a McDonald's in the opera area that has a, excuse me, that has a concert venue. Not line. This surprised the heck out of me whenever I saw it for the first time.

(25:30):

Where you an I there the one time when the guy was performing at lunch. Oh yeah. That, okay. So this old guy came into this McDonald's and like he ordered food and then he came in with like a guitar and like this like one man drum set and he just started playing music at this McDonald's and I looked over at it, Aaron and I'm like, I think this is the most Nashville experience I've ever had. I'm sitting in McDonald's eating a big Mac and this guy comes and plays music at McDonald's.

(25:58):

Yeah. Like there's a stage, there's a PA system, there's a whole, there's lights, there's, there's everything. I mean it's just, it's great. Like you can't ask for anything more when you go into that area. And there's also some great restaurants inside of Opry land, even more than it's on this list. But you're going to have to wait. We're not going to give that to you today. We are out of time today. We're going to move on to our local artists to feature here in Nashville with a band called desk job for all of you. Nine to fivers. That desk job is playing their song warning signs. You can find their link in there in the show notes. They've got Spotify, they've got everything. And this was sent in by Kyle grandio. Kyle, thank you so much for sending this in. Kyle has been to or sorry, lived in Nashville since 2013 and the band formed back in 2019, so not too long ago, but incredible music. And Kyle said his favorite restaurant is Nico leftovers and that is in East Nashville. We talked about that yesterday and again, if you want to learn the history of the places that we were just talking about all these restaurants and everything. There used to be a theme park sitting right under them. You can go to a yesterday's episode and listen to that to hear the history of Opryland USA, but we're going to take it out of this national data episode with desk jobs, song warning signs,
